Breast Implant Exchange in Tyler Texas

Breast implants are not meant to last forever. A breast implant exchange (also called breast implant replacement) removes your current implants and places new ones, so your breasts can match how your body and your preferences have changed.

Dr. Raven Henderson, a board certified plastic surgeon (Board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery), will help you decide whether an exchange, a revision, or removal is the right choice for you.

What is the difference between exchange, revision, and removal?

  • Exchange: Your current implants are removed and new implants are placed. You may change size, shape, profile, or implant type.
  • Revision: Surgery that corrects a specific concern, such as implant position or scar tissue. It may include new implants or it may not.
  • Removal (explant): Implants are taken out and not replaced. A breast lift is sometimes discussed along with removal.

Which one is right for you depends on your anatomy, the condition of your implants, and what you want your result to look and feel like.

Why do women choose a breast implant exchange?

  • Time: Implants are not lifetime devices. Many surgeons commonly see replacement or revision after 10 to 15 years, though the FDA does not set a required replacement date.
  • Changes in the breast: Pregnancy, nursing, weight change, and aging can alter breast shape and position.
  • Capsular contracture: Scar tissue tightens around an implant, which may make the breast feel firm, look different, or become uncomfortable.
  • Implant position: An implant that has shifted lower, drifted to the side, or moved toward the center.
  • Rippling or visible edges: Especially when natural tissue has thinned over time.
  • Rupture or deflation: A saline implant that deflates is noticeable. A silicone implant can rupture without symptoms, which is why imaging matters.
  • A change in preference: A different size, shape, or implant type that suits where you are now.

If your reason is not on this list, tell us. The right plan starts with your concern.

What does the FDA recommend for implant imaging?

For silicone gel implants, the FDA recommends an MRI or ultrasound about five years after surgery, then every two to three years. A silent rupture may not cause symptoms, and a routine mammogram does not reliably detect it. Ask your primary care provider, gynecologist, or Dr. Henderson about imaging, and bring any results to your consultation.

Am I a candidate for a breast implant exchange?

An exchange may be a good fit if you:

  • Have implants that are several years old, or that have changed in shape, position, or feel
  • Have been told your implant may be ruptured or deflated
  • Want a different size, shape, or type of implant
  • Are in good general health, do not use products containing nicotine, and have a stable weight

Dr. Henderson will examine you, review any imaging, and recommend the best approach.

What to Expect From Surgery

Your consultation (in person or virtual) covers your history, your current implants, any imaging, and your goals. During surgery, Dr. Henderson removes your existing implants, addresses scar tissue or position concerns as needed, and places the new implants. If your breasts have lowered over time, she may discuss adding a breast lift. Please do not use products containing nicotine, since nicotine can interfere with healing.

What are the anesthesia options for a breast implant exchange?

We offer multiple levels of anesthesia at our office-based surgical facility, and Dr. Henderson is known for awake procedures. For appropriate candidates, an exchange can be performed awake with tumescent anesthesia and oral, IM, or IV sedation. Your sedation can be adjusted to keep you comfortable and relaxed, and you are always able to protect your own airway, with no breathing tube needed. The same exchange can also be performed with general anesthesia, and which option fits you is decided together at your consultation.

The setting can be our office-based surgical facility or a local hospital if you prefer. Pricing varies based on the facility. Learn more about awake procedures.

What is the recovery like after a breast implant exchange?

  • First days: Recovery is typically about 3–7 days. Expect soreness, swelling, and bruising. Dressings and a support bra help your healing.
  • Activity: Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise until Dr. Henderson clears you.
  • Final result: Swelling takes weeks to months to settle, and scars continue to fade over time.

Your recovery can vary with your procedure and whether additional procedures, such as a breast lift, are included. Dr. Henderson will give you a personalized timeline at your consultation.

Risks and Safety

Risks include bleeding, infection, scarring, delayed healing, asymmetry, changes in nipple or breast sensation, implant malposition, capsular contracture, implant rupture, and the possibility of further surgery. Dr. Henderson will review these risks with you before surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between breast implant exchange, revision, and removal?

An exchange removes your current implants and places new ones. A revision is surgery that corrects a specific problem, such as implant position or scar tissue, and may or may not include new implants. Removal (explant) takes the implants out without replacing them. Dr. Henderson will recommend the approach that fits your anatomy and goals.

Do breast implants have to be replaced every 10 years?

Not necessarily. Implants are not lifetime devices, and many surgeons say they commonly need replacement or revision after 10 to 15 years, but the FDA does not set a required replacement date. The right time depends on how your implants and breasts have changed and on your imaging.

How often should silicone implants be checked with imaging?

The FDA recommends an MRI or ultrasound about five years after silicone implant surgery and every two to three years afterward, because a silicone implant rupture can be silent. A routine mammogram does not reliably detect it.

Can a breast lift be combined with an implant exchange?

Often, yes. Pregnancy, weight change, and time can change the shape and position of the breast. Whether a lift makes sense with your exchange is decided at your consultation.

How long is recovery from a breast implant exchange?

Recovery is typically about 3–7 days. Your recovery can vary with your procedure and whether additional procedures, such as a breast lift, are included. Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise until Dr. Henderson clears you.

Will insurance cover my breast implant exchange?

We are out of network with all insurance plans, and surgeon fees are self-pay. If you desire insurance to cover your procedure, call your insurer to get a list of in-network plastic surgeons.

What should I do before surgery regarding nicotine?

Do not use products containing nicotine. Nicotine can interfere with healing, and your team will review the exact timing with you.
